the background;;
history; Despite what the books may say, not every fairytale has a happy ending. And such is the case of Alex’s family, whose story starts when his mom first meets the man she would marry and have two kids with on a nearby future.
Lavinia Delpierro, the daughter of a mere plantation worker, used to live in a very small town north east of Texas. There she really didn’t know much, the school she had attended to wasn’t exactly the best around but she couldn’t help but yearn for bigger things. One day a plane from the big city stopped by Lavinia’s village, and out of it came the most beautiful man she had ever seen. Now, Lavinia was on top of the list of village beauties and that man, Scott as they called him, was on the list of those whom she had laced with the first eye contact. Soon enough, as you might have guessed, the two ended up sleeping together causing Lavinia to end up pregnant and the two having to marry rather fast in order for the baby to have a good home. Now, it wasn’t Scott’s idea of them to get married, no, it had been Lavinia’s father who practically made them get married. In fact, Scott had been quite reluctant towards the marriage, but ended up marrying anyway.
Because they got married was not going to be a reason for Scott to leave the big city and come live in this horrible poor village, so he moved back bringing Lavinia along. Back then the place Lavinia started calling home was San Francisco, California. There Scott owned a big house, had a great job along with a great payment and many, really many, flings with lots of different women. For a month or more Lavinia had to take care of herself and clean the house off the other women’s clothes and lingeries. Scott would tell her he was getting rid of them and that she was the one he loved, but after a few months when she was only two months before having her baby, the man started beating her for silly and minimal reasons. The woman was far from home, pregnant of her first child, living with a man she barely knew, what she could do if she hadn’t even finished high school? There was no other way than accept that beating had been only a phase and her husband would grow out of it soon enough. Only he didn’t.
On the night Lavinia went into labor, Scott drove her to the hospital and that was all. Saying he needed to make a phone call, the man vanished leaving his ‘wife’ to give birth to their first son on her own, as hard as it could possibly be with a broken water. 03:27 AM, April 15th, Alex Jonathan Campbell had his first breath of air, the only joy his mom had since a good time. The young boy was born very healthy, of good weight and height, but ever since his early years Alex looked nothing like his mother. Alex was pure Scott tip to toe, but not even that made Scott attracted to the boy. The first time he held his kid was more then one year after he had been born, when he had beaten Lavinia at the point of her not wanting to come out of her room.
Unfortunately, even through Alex’s growing up the beatings of his father on his mother did not cease, as he would throw on her all his stress from work on her. Even being married and having a child with Lavinia didn’t keep Scott from his former promiscuity and he continued having multiple affairs outside his marriage even with his son being old enough to acknowledge it. Not Even the second time Lavinia got pregnant made Scott change. But as much as Scott would beat Lavinia, he never ever put his hands on Alex, for nothing, most of the times he just ignored him. The boy grew silent, attached to his mother as much as he could, and a very loving boy when it came to his mom and his friends.
One day, Alex caught Scott beating his mom and he just couldn’t stand it anymore. He, being fourteen years old and quite strong, pushed his father away from his mom, stepping up for her and yelled that he was going to turn him in to the police. Scott, being very angry at the moment didn’t think twice before striking his heavy hand upon his son, making the boy fall down unconscious. That was it for Lavinia, the last time she admitted that man she didn’t really know beating, not her, but her son. So, one night, Alex and his mom grabbed their stuffs and the young Angelina, caught the first bus and headed away from that horrible man. For it hadn’t really been a planned out escape, they got down on the bus’ last stop- which happened to be Manhattan Beach, one of the most beautiful places the two had ever seen. Luckily a few days before Lavinia had managed to get Scott’s credit card and had withdrawn a good quantity of money that allowed them to pay a simple hotel for a few weeks. Soon she had found a job at one of the stores of the Manhattan Beach Boulevard and Alex, having to go to school, got a half-time job. Even so, they managed it already and a couple of years later they had a good money saved allowing them to rent a home in Pembrook Court.
Alex is now free from his horrible father but still quite voluntarily attached to his mother. His mom had him when she was so young, only 18 she was, and even so she devoted all her love to him- the boy knows how much he owns her, his whole life and possibly even more. Lavinia’s life is being renewed, she found a nice man to whom she had been dating for a couple of months, someone Alex also trusts. The young Angelina doesn’t quite remember how violent her father was, but she kind of knows why he is never around. Their lives are OK now, only getting better day by day.
Maybe this long fairy tale will finally have a happy ending, say? Well, anyway, a happy ending is more than the three diserve, anyway.
